@wingedhussar @JulioReich @freddie_the_fed again, that depends. you can convert a 120v outlet to 240v simply by swapping the breaker in the panel and changing the receptacle, since 240v doesn't need a ground. for 120v, if your commute is light (10-12 miles, one way) or non-existent, the 120v slow charging is fine, actually a typical install will likely only run you $1,000 including a good charger, or less if you just do it yourself. if you do up the math, the savings in gas pays for it usually within the first year im not an ev advocate. i have two other cars and never even wanted one. i just got my car because i thought it looked cool. after i bought it, i started learning about all of this and was surprised to find a lot of the talking points about the advantages could be true, depending on the situation

@wingedhussar @JulioReich @freddie_the_fed right now, ionna, in my area, is around 39 cents per kwh. my car averages 3 miles per kwh in nice weather at highway speeds, so $3.90 per gallon, effectively. i had a WRX, which right now, I would be paying $4.79/gallon to drive 25 miles. if you start your trip with a full charge from home, that's effectively paying $1.30/gallon for the first 180-200 miles. and don't forget, if you're finishing your trip somewhere with free charging, like some hotels have, that's a second free charge. so, depending on the situation, it is much cheaper. right now, i have free charging for two years through electrify america, so my trip to missouri from ohio was free but i 100% agree, if we only talk about on the road, ev charging is just as pricey as an ice car, in a lot of cases, worse

@freddie_the_fed Everyone wants to bitch about American rail but that trip is the same distance as the width of Germany and a comparable Train trip in Germany takes 4 and a half hours.

@JulioReich @freddie_the_fed the way i see it is we have two main issues with being able to have a rail system like japan.

  • america is massive, like @wingedhussar says. i think relying on a single company or the federal government to make it work is just stupid. effectively, you would want all 48 contiguous state governments working together with the size, with the mandate of at least one high speed line per state, stopping in the capital and probably at least two next largest cities

  • the second, major hurdle, is that it’s freaking expensive to use the train. not only would i need to drive an hour to get to the nearest station, but i would need to leave my car there, then pay more to take the trip, slower, than what it would cost to drive with an ICE car. we don’t even need to talk about the cost savings using an EV right now…
